Important News for Your Contractors About CSCS Cards

Contractors

If your contractors are using Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards to verify that they have the necessary training and qualifications required for the work they carry out, there are two important pieces of news they may need to know about.

Applications can now be made online

As anyone who has applied for a CSCS card in the last few years will no doubt agree, the process for applying has historically been less than smooth and modern. It required documents to be scanned and emailed, followed by a lengthy phone call to process the application and take payment.

This has now been replaced with a new system, which allows all details to be entered online and supporting documents to be uploaded. Payment can also be taken online. They even have a handy video explaining the new application process and CSCS have launched a new contact centre, which applicants can call for help with their applications.

The new system includes a number of innovations designed to tackle fraud, for example checking supporting documents against the relevant issuing organisation’s database to ensure certificates are genuine.

“Industry Accreditation” is being phased out

Sometimes known as “grandfather rights”, Industry Accreditation allowed workers to obtain CSCS cards on the strength of an employer’s recommendation, without achieving a recognised qualification. This process was closed to new applicants in 2010, but those already holding cards were able to renew.

After consultation with the industry, CSCS has now decided to withdraw industry accreditation completely, and has announced a process by which it will be phased out, meaning all CSCS card holders will have achieved a recognised qualification.

Industry accredited CSCS cards can be renewed until 30th June 2024, but all cards renewed under the system will expire on 31st December 2024.

If any of your contractors are among the 60,000 current holders of industry accreditation cards and they don’t yet hold a nationally recognised qualification, they will need to register for the appropriate qualification before their cards expire in 2024.
