World Cup set to highlight benefits of flexible working

Category: Contractor Industry News

Firms that offer flexible working could be best-placed to deal with the World Cup, it has been claimed.

More than half (51 per cent) of UK employers are considering such options for professional contractors and staff during the games, according to legal firm DLA Piper.

However, more than two-thirds (68 per cent) have not given employees any guidance on acceptable behaviour during the tournament, such as calling in sick.

The firm urges bosses to be prepared to closely manage employee relations, especially around the England matches, and consider offering options such as shift swapping and altering working hours with care.

"Business leaders need to consider the finer implications of their actions," warned Tim Marshall, UK head of employment and partner at DLA Piper.

He said flexible working options should encompass all staff, no matter which, if any, football team they support.

Most World Cup matches are likely to have afternoon or evening kick-offs for UK viewers.
