Women 'need encouragement' to become umbrella company contractors

The government has been called upon to aid females as they look to become contractors, perhaps using the services of an umbrella company.

A report by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has highlighted some ways of making it easier for women to venture down this career route.

One of the methods the coalition has been urged to adopt is to encourage alternative sources of financing, while another calls for more promotion of female entrepreneurial role models.

Meanwhile, the New Enterprise Allowance Scheme could help bring women into the world of contracting by offering female mentors.

The FSB's report comes after it was found that 46 per cent of those in work in the UK are women, yet only 29 per cent of self-employed workers are females.

One place where budding contractors may want to look for work opportunities is through social media.

This is after research by HR communications firm SMRS found that more than half of employers are set to use this portal for recruitment in 2011, FreelanceSupermarket.com also reported.
