Umbrella company contractors warned over 'tax phishing'
Posted by Daniel Frost
Umbrella company contractors have been told to be on the lookout for suspicious emails which are promising tax rebates.
Identity fraud expert Equifax stated that a new spate of phishing emails has been seen, asking those who have recently filled in their self-assessment tax form to click on a link and supply personal information in order to receive a tax refund.
Neil Munroe, external affairs director of Equifax, said: "It's very rare that any organisation would ask its customers to confirm personal details such as bank and credit card details via email or telephone. Fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated in how they operate."
The expert went on to urge consumers and businesses to be vigilant of these types of phishing scams and the risk to their identity.
According to HMRC, it does not request payment and personal details via email, instead umbrella company contractors should expect correspondence of this kind to come in the post.
