Umbrella company contractors told 'smaller shopping centres more resistant'

Company umbrella contractors working in the retail sector of the UK have been told of the trend that shopping centres are witnessing as a result of a tough economic climate.

Matthew Hopkinson, director at the Local Data Company, stated that "in many ways, the larger the centre, the higher the vacancy", with small centres proving "more resistant".

The reason for this claim is that smaller shopping centres are aimed at "local shopping provision", according to the expert.

Fuel duty rising has helped these stores further, Mr Hopkinson pointed out, as consumers are choosing to stay local to carry out their shopping chores, in order to save money.

He explained: "At the end of the day, life is about convenience; we all seem to not have enough time to do everything we want to in a particular day."

Those with umbrella companies were given this advice soon after the Local Data Company revealed that average retail vacancy rose by 4.8 per cent in large towns over the past 12 months.
