Company umbrella contractors have been told that Manchester City Council expects to axe 2,000 jobs.

The figure is a considerable hike on the authority's previous estimate of 1,200 - with a sharp cut in funding by the government cited as a reason for this decision.

In an attempt to make savings of over £100million in the next year, the council feels that a 17 per cent reduction in its workforce is required, those with umbrella companies in public sector jobs were told.

Labour's Richard Leese, who is the council leader, said that the "unfairness of the government's financial grant settlement" in the city has been highlighted recently.

He added: "We now have to find £110 million in savings next year - £60 million more than expected - because of front-loading and the re-distribution of money from Manchester to more affluent areas."

Recently, Jonathan Loynes, chief European economist at Capital Economics, pointed to the services and manufacturing sectors as important parts of the UK economy in the future.
