Umbrella company contractors' daunting first day prospects
Posted by John Crawley
There are many things that an IT contractor with an umbrella company should look to avoid when starting new work.
For one, being the first contractor ever on a site should raise alarm bells to people in this position straight away, according to Gerry McLaughlin.
He told IT Contractor that this is because clients will expect a guru or a whiz to be associated with a company umbrella contractor, as well as significantly better than anyone else in the workplace.
Other matters which should be met with caution include a site not having a company restaurant – as this will likely mean money being spent rather rapidly, as well as being told of a boss that there are to take over from someone who is being fired.
This latter point could be made even worse in Mr McLaughlin's opinion if the person to be laid off in place of an umbrella company contractor is a much-loved member of staff, as it is possible "all the permies will hate you for taking the job of one of their friends".
Mr McLaughlin recently indicated to IT Contractor some pointers which people would like out of their umbrella company, with being paid on time and at a weekly rate just to name a couple of these.
