Umbrella company: One million more people to be given new tax demands

Category:

Around one million people are set to receive new tax demands after a new computer system picked up more errors which date back to 2008.

Those with an umbrella company were told that this number is in addition to the 5.7 million people who were notified that they had either under or overpaid last year.

A spokesperson for HM Revenue and Customs told the Daily Telegraph that it is looking to bring an end to old tax cases "as quickly and accurately as possible".

"This means most people will get repayment cheques but a minority will have some tax to pay. This is only fair and will enable us to move forward to a more accurate and responsive tax system," the representative added.
Those owing money will have up to three years to pay back any outstanding amount.

Contractors now only have three weeks left to get their online self-assessment tax returns filled out, with the deadline standing at midnight on January 31st.ADNFCR-2808-ID-800334070-ADNFCR
