Company umbrella contractors may be interested to hear that the majority of people who are reaching their retirement age are planning to postpone quitting work.

Almost two-thirds (62 per cent) of people have indicated that they are hoping to remain in a job into their retirement period, according to Prudential's Class of 2011 research.

Of those who said they will continue to remain in the workplace, 46 per cent have said they intend to do so in order to further aid their pension or savings funds.

Furthermore, 32 per cent have admitted that they would work another two years if it guaranteed them more of a retirement fund.

Vince Smith-Hughes, of Prudential, commented: "The reality is that many people do not see continuing to work as a disaster, many enjoy the social and intellectual challenges of work."

The findings comes after David Rodger, managing director of the Debt Advice Foundation, recently told those with umbrella companies that more people are entering retirement in debt.

He acknowledged that the one of the reasons behind this is that "the first generation of credit card users [are] reaching pension age."
