Almost half of UK residents believe the nation to be an entrepreneurial one, though only 12 per cent of would-be company umbrella contractors are willing to take a venture into this method of work in the next year.

However, 34 per cent have either set up their own business or are considering taking the jump, according to a new study by YouGov.

This latter figure is a two per cent rise compared to last year's stats, with the idea of 'being my own boss' the main reason for people becoming contractors.

'Reaping the rewards from my hard work' is also a strong reason for workers adding to the number of umbrella company contractors. The YouGov study also found that men are most likely to begin their own company, with 31 per cent keen to start up compared to only 22 per cent of females.

Recently, Doug Brett-Matthewson told Contractor UK about the reasons why people should look into becoming a contractor.

Among the reasons are that is allows them to be flexible in their work, as well as easily going towards where jobs are most likely to be found.
