Strike action could be prevented 'by engaging with contractors'

Employers have been told to engage more with their staff before implementing major changes or redundancies, which could see those with umbrella companies seeing an alteration into their working environment.

The advice came from a spokeswoman for Unison, Europe's biggest public-sector union, who believes that bosses consulting with representatives and unions could also be a great way to prevent any potential strikes, something that she feels is a downfall of many managers and councils.

She explained: "They need to talk early to their workforce, keep them informed and to consult with union representatives so that they can head off any potential conflict."

However, the spokeswoman believed that current trade union laws mean that industrial action, which may involve those with an umbrella company, is usually kept to a minimum, as a national issue has to arise before a potential problem becomes a risk.

Her advice follows on from recent research by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, which found that 49 per cent of public-sector workers said that they would disrupt public services in order to save their own jobs.
