Small business leaders are more likely to challenge accepted conventions of good practice, according to a new report.

Staff numbers are no longer considered a benchmark of success by more than half (58 per cent) of business leaders, and most judge employees by their results rather than time spent at their desks, the T-Mobile research revealed.

Furthermore, age is no longer seen as a pre-requisite for being a trusted business leader and more than a third of business owners have no qualms about working with friends and family.

"The way business is being done is changing and with it, the mixture of ideas and perceptions that constitute success are being challenged and rewritten," commented Max Taylor, head of business marketing at the mobile operator.

Small business owners are increasingly putting themselves in greater control of their operations and growth by challenging preconceived notions of success, he added.
