Rewards could make umbrella company contractors 'feel more valued'

Employers could make company umbrella contractors feel more valued if they were to reward them for their work, an expert has indicated.

Dilys Robinson, principal research fellow at the Institute for Employment Studies, pointed out that these honours do not even need to be financially based.

As a way of feeling appreciated, those with umbrella companies could receive an extra day's holiday from their client for putting in a wealth of hard-working shifts.

Even a simple 'thank you' from a client to a worker in person or in writing could be seen as a positive gesture, Ms Robinson noted.

She added: "It also helps if communication is clear and two-way, i.e. employees can make suggestions, which are listened to."

The advice comes as the Reed Job Index has shown that salaries are continuing to be subdued, remaining below the Index start point of 100 in the UK, which was set in December 2009.
