Retirement age needs revision
Category: Employment Law, Taxation and Legislation for Contractors
Contractors using umbrella companies should not be restricted by the current employment laws, according to one expert, who said that the system means lots of people with skills are being wasted because of enforced retirement.Michelle Mitchell, Age UK charity director, said that at the moment companies are able to force some people to retire and he believes this needs to be looked at again.
"After announcing further consultation on phasing out the default retirement age, the government should now set a clear timetable to end speculation and confusion among employers and employees alike," she stated.
The expert added that a lot of people intend to work beyond 65 years of age, but could see their plans scuppered by the default retirement age.
Research from Aviva's latest Real Retirement Report recently revealed that more than 68 per cent of UK adults intend to work beyond their current standard retirement age, which stands at 65.
