REC: Number of contractors finding work increases

Category: Recruitment Agency News

New figures have shown that contractor payrolls are growing, with a marked increase in the number of these workers being hired during April.

The Report on Jobs, which has been published by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG, has reported a growth in jobs for permanent, temporary and contract staff.

In addition, it found that hourly pay rates for this type of work grew at their fastest rate for two years during last month.

Kevin Green, chief executive of the REC, emphasised the rise, although he acknowledged that the rise in employment was slower than in preceding months.

He said: "The incoming government must address two immediate priorities - stimulating jobs growth and reducing expenditure without creating a public sector recession through shedding thousands of posts."

This contrasts with the prediction put forward by Simon Kirby, economist at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, who claimed that there will be a delay between the end of the recession and the eventual return of growth in the jobs market.
