Qualifications may only get umbrella company contractors 'so far'

A good personality and a variety of soft skills may be what a client uses as the element to hire a company umbrella contractor to their business.
Michael Dean, head of marketing at the National Computing Centre, believes that qualifications are used by companies to measure who will be suitable staff and who can be left off the shortlist.
However, he said that this aspect may only get contractors with umbrella companies over one hurdle, with those having self motivation, project management and leadership skills possibly beating those without these skills to the job.
Mr Dean added: "One candidate may have more qualifications than another, but their personality may not be the right fit for the job."
His views came after research conducted by PricewaterhouseCooper found that skills shortages could make opportunities in the private sector being filled in 2011.
The company's study highlighted that 53 per cent of respondents of UK firms noted skills shortages as their biggest challenge to overcome.
