Public sector workers 'unvalued and demotivated'

Contractors with umbrella companies have been told about the discontent that is being felt in the public sector.

After a spate of budget cuts by the government, Dilys Robinson, principal research fellow at the Institute for Employment Studies, believes that that these have hit hard and have made workers feel unvalued and demotivated.

Furthermore, those in the public sector could find it difficult to secure a job in the private sector, Ms Robinson warns, as the latter is still cautious about hiring.

She added: "Older workers with children coming out of school or university are also worried about their job prospects, as young people's unemployment is at a high - this will be compounding anxieties."

The views come after Liverpool City Council recently announced that it is planning to axe up to 1,500 jobs, as a way of dealing with a 22 per cent cut in government funding.
