PCG: Budget was much ado about nothing

Category: Finance for Contractors

The recent Budget announced by Chancellor Alistair Darling was "much ado about nothing", according to the freelancing representative body PCG.

John Brazier, managing director of the organisation, said that it was not the most important Budget of the year as he will be waiting for another one following the upcoming general election.

He claimed that the freelance community could not take much away from the Budget but it appears that the government has done nothing to harm them either.

"It is in the 'real' Budget after the General Election where PCG will be expecting genuine progress for freelancers, contractors and micro-businesses," Mr Brazier commented.

He added that the flexibility that freelancers provide to the economy should be recognised.

Elsewhere, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) welcomed some of the Budget's revelations, particularly the reduction in business rates for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Sam Strange, director of business support within the REC's Academy for Business, said that there is still a need for sensible guidance and mentoring, however.
