Opinion of IT company umbrella contractors 'changing'

Being an IT contractor is no longer seen as a "highly cyclical" role to be in, an expert has told those with umbrella companies.

Gerry McLaughlin, of ITContractor.com, pointed out that this was an issue with this mode of work in the past, with many in these positions having to spend cash which they had put away once they faced long stints out of contract.

However, he believes that IT contracting is now seen as a "safer profession", especially when compared to those fully employed.

Mr McLaughlin stated: "Companies now see them as the enablers of cost cutting during a downturn as well as being core to the business during an upturn - so contractors now have an each way bet."

This new belief of being a company umbrella contractor could, in effect, see more people opting to take up work in this fashion, instead of sticking it out as a permanent employee, according to the expert.

Recently, Mr McLaughlin commented that contractors are no longer being seen as a cost, but as "integral to their companies".
