Older people 'should become company umbrella contractors'

Instead of looking to go back into permanent work with an employer, those in the older age ranges may find it best to join an umbrella company and start a career as a contractor.

This is the view of Emma Soames, editor at large of Saga Magazine, who was reacting to recent findings in the Work Audit of official labour market statistics, which revealed that the number of middle-aged UK residents in work is lower than spring 2008.

As long as people are in a working field which allows company umbrella contractors to shine, they should see it as a good strategy, according to Ms Soames.

She highlighted that self-employed people have the added benefit of controlling how long they work for.

Ms Soames added: "Depending on your skill set, your capabilities and where you live, if people can see a gap in the market, go for it and do it yourself."
