Ofsted: Effective teaching needed in science education

Category: Contractor Industry News

Ofsted could be on the lookout for the best teaching contractors as it warned that science education suffers if not handled properly.

The science curriculum is "impoverished" if it is simply considered as a list of knowledge, said Ian Richardson, national advisor for science at Ofsted,

"In better performing schools it's clear the consideration of the how of teaching and learning is given significant consideration," he said at the Westminster Education Forum Keynote Seminar: Raising the profile of science in schools and society.

Science departments with a coherent and consistent view of effective teaching and learning, whether it be via teaching contractors, permanent staff or classroom assistants, see student engagement and enjoyment rise, the inspector added.

An Ofsted report has highlighted the need for subject knowledge and careful planning in raising school standards, pointing out that creativity in the classroom aids motivation, progress and attainment in pupils.
