New contractors 'must register as self-employed'

Those contractors who move from working for an employer to doing projects for them while self-employed must register their status with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), an expert has claimed.

Martin Hesketh, managing director of Brookson, emphasised the importance of maintaining a distinction between the work conducted as an employee and that which will be done as a contractor.

He said: "Ensuring that you can distinguish the way you work to that of the employees employed directly with your client will also help you to avoid liability under IR35."

Mr Hesketh added that the best way to deal with this arrangement will be to get a separate contract in place for each of the projects which are undertaken and to negotiate a fixed fee for these.

Recent figures published by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation have shown that 31 per cent of companies are currently looking to boost their temporary workforces in the next 12 months.
