More engineering experts needed, commentator says

Category: Contractor Industry News

Not enough young people are becoming engineering contractors, according to one industry commentator.

The past two decades have seen lower numbers of young adults entering the sector than previously, said Russell Dalglish, managing director at global technical resourcing provider Talascend.

"Engineering is viewed as standing around outside with a hard hat on in not nice conditions," he told Recruiter.

"From the mid 1980s to the mid 2000s, kids were not going into engineering."

This was because there were not as many engineering projects going on around the world, but now the industry is growing, Mr Dalglish continued.

Now, there is a shortfall of available talent, he warned.

Those working in the engineering sector already are facing challenges in terms of making the most of the latest technology relating to sustainable products, building supplier SIG has said.

Despite legislation regarding energy efficiency in the building sector being ramped up, there is still a long way to go before sustainable products become mainstream, said operations director Vince Lunn.
