Relationship breakdowns have been blamed as a key reason for people suffering debt problems, umbrella company contractors may be interested to hear.

According to research by the Debt Advice Foundation, one in ten people who accessed the charity's helpline has pinpointed a love-split as a main area which has caused them financial difficulties.

This factor was cited more than of those who regarded a growing family, unemployment, illnesses, gambling and alcohol problems as key areas for debt issues.

David Rodger, Managing Director of registered UK charity, Debt Advice Foundation, has suggested that the end of a relationship can have an aftershock onto the money flow of those with umbrella companies.

He explained: "If the couple has been cohabiting, there's the cost of new living arrangements to consider - and they may already be tied into a mortgage or rental agreement."

Meanwhile, a recent study by Halifax Savings has found that 89 per cent of women believe that it is important to have individual savings.
