The axe is to be wielded on 1,500 jobs at Liverpool City Council, those with umbrella companies in the public sector may be interested to hear.

Council leader Joe Anderson revealed the news to its staff, warning that as much as one in six jobs are at risk, as it tries to combat a 22 per cent cut in government funding.

Earlier this month, Manchester City Council announced that it will need to shred 2,000 jobs to overcome sharp cuts in funding by the government itself.

Now, the authority in Liverpool has had to take similar measures, as it tries to work up savings of £141 million between now and 2013.

The decision has been deemed 'Black Thursday' by those in the Merseyside location, with further news indicating to company umbrella contractors that between 300 and 500 jobs are to be axed in the voluntary sector.

Mr Anderson explained: "I have never had to make such a difficult and heartbreaking decision, and I know everyone working on the budget feels the same."
