Immigration cap 'could be harmful to UK economy'
Category: Employment Law, Taxation and Legislation for Contractors
The proposed immigration cap by the coalition government could harm the UK economy in the long-term, according to one business expert.Kevin Green, chief executive of the recruitment and employment confederation, said that the cap on migrants from outside the European Economic Area could lead to greater skills shortages in the UK, possibly affecting umbrella companies.
"There were huge skills shortages before the recession and if the private sector is to grow rapidly out of recession, it will need skilled workers to do so. An artificial cap on immigration will affect business growth and delivery of core services," he said.
He added that UK workers need to be able to fill the skills gap, but conceded that it will take time for them to be trained and ready.
Claire Nurden, research and policy officer for Independent Age, recently said that the default retirement age is outdated and implies, to some people, that those over the age of 65 are less capable.
