Firms taking on IT contractors to improve security must be doing so for the right reasons and with company-wide support, it has been said.Solutions should not be "over-designed" or entirely the part of security specialists, said Jan De Blauwe, IT transversal guidance and services information security risk manager at BNPP Fortis.
When looking to IT contractors to boost security, he urged firms to be clear about their goals.
"Check that your objectives are not security objectives but business objectives," he told the Gartner Identity & Access Management (IAM) Summit 2010.
All management and board members should be on board the project and the updates configured so all employees can make use of it where necessary, Mr Blauwe continued.
The IAM summit aimed to help IT and business professionals exploit the potential of IAM investments and realise the risk management, governance and direct business benefits they offer.
