Contractors using umbrella companies should be protected while on a job, according to an expert, who said that people need to realise the impact a worker's death or injury can have on families and individuals.

Richard Jones, Institution of Occupational Safety and Health policy and technical director, said that the coalition government needs to give more support to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as it tries to cut the number of fatalities in the workplace.

"We are concerned at the increase in agricultural deaths and think it is important to remember that every single death is a tragedy for the family and friends of those involved," he stated.

The myths and misinformation surrounding health and safety at work needs to be addressed as well, according to Mr Jones.

In other news, the HSE recently released provisional data, which shows that 151 workers were killed between April 1st 2009 and March 31st 2010 compared to 178 deaths in 2008/09.
