Green business skills shortage 'needs to be addressed'

The government should make reducing the skills gap of people in green businesses a priority, those with umbrella companies have been told.

Alex Randall, spokesman for the Centre for Alternative Technology, believes that when it comes to green resources, there should be more done to give education and skills about these subjects.

He pointed out that a shortage in people with these skills is leading to a bigger problem for making the UK a zero-carbon society than other issues, such as resource depletion.

Mr Randall commented: "This is probably the biggest factor stopping the UK moving rapidly towards a low-carbon society."

One area which the government could act on, according to the expert, is to learn company umbrella contractors the skills necessary to install renewable energy systems.

Recently, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs warned that the availability and market price of some materials and resources could be uncertain in the medium to long-term future.
