Gov't 'should encourage entrepreneurs to hire'

Category: Contractor Industry News

The government should be helping entrepreneurs to take on staff, one employment body has suggested.

Chancellor George Osborne's emergency Budget is a positive step in helping to create more jobs, but business leaders need more encouragement, said Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society.

"Within the context that the government's Budget options were severely difficult, it is positive," he commented.

"I think it is just one part. On its own, no, it is not enough."

This will not give entrepreneurs enough confidence to start employing people again, so other areas to boost job creation must be considered, Mr Huxham added.

During his emergency Budget speech, Mr Osborne pointed out that a jobs tax is the "last thing" Britain needs as it recovers from the recession.

He revealed that, as of April 2011, the threshold at which employers start to pay National Insurance will rise, making the cost of hiring people on incomes under £20,000 less than it is currently.
