Government 'should support contractors'
Posted by Sarah Putt
Bookkeeping, bureaucracy and tax concerns in the UK should be addressed by the coalition government, in order to aid company umbrella contractors.
This is the view of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), which pointed out that these measures are currently hampering many in the country.
John Walker, national chairman of the FSB, commented: "We believe that the government should support the self-employed and encourage those that wish to be self-employed through the tax system."
He went on to say that while he believes that every business in the UK should pay the correct taxation, Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs should acknowledge "that small businesses do not have finance departments and occasional errors will occur".
On the matter of taxes, the call from the Office of Tax Simplification to merge income tax and national insurance received backing from Thomas Parry, research projects manager at the Forum of Private Business.
He recently commented that combining the two factors will mean there is less for contractors with umbrella companies to worry about.
