Sustainable building products are not yet becoming more mainstream, meaning engineering contractors cannot make the most of the latest technological advances, according to one industry expert.

Until architects and developers start designing sustainable construction products into their new-builds they will not become widely used, said Vince Lunn, operations director at building supplier SIG.

He urged those in the construction industry to be innovative with their use of new products, pointing out that things such as phase change materials do not have to be used in walls alone.

The Construction Products Association has also highlighted the difficulties faced by engineering contractors and others in the construction sector when it comes to achieving sustainability goals.

Industry affairs director for the organisation John Tebbit said administration costs hold many efforts back and called for green legislation, such as the Code for Sustainable Homes, to be simplified and given clearer objectives.
