Default retirement age 'outdated and negative'
Category: Employment Law, Taxation and Legislation for Contractors
The current default retirement age in the UK has been slammed by Independent Age.It is "outdated and gives rise to negative stereotypes of ageing and older people" said Claire Nurden, research and policy officer for the group.
She pointed out that forcing people to retire when they reach a certain image can imply that they are less capable.
"It fails to reflect the valuable knowledge and expertise that many have gained by this age, and are still able - and willing - to contribute," Ms Nurden continued.
Many older people feel able to carry on working and miss the opportunity to stay in employment, she added.
Ms Nurden has called for a more flexible retirement system to be introduced, allowing people to stop working in a way that reflects their abilities and needs.
A gradual reduction in working hours could be the answer, she suggested.
