Company umbrella contractors have been told that the number of jobs earmarked for the axe by councils has shot up in the past week.

The latest figures by the GMB union have shown that over 150,000 jobs are set for redundancy by UK local authorities, a rise of 10,000 in a space of seven days, the Guardian reported.

A total of 260 councils and authorities were checked in the stats, with a further 239 expected to reveal how hard their axe will fall in the next few weeks.

In the past few days, the biggest cuts have emerged from Rotherham council, with 893 jobs at risk. This is followed by Wigan council (820), West Sussex county council (800) and South Wales Police Authority (688).

Paul Kenny, GMB General Secretary, commented: "The figure for jobs under threat in the public sector just keeps going up. The government can not blame the snow for this bad news."

Recently, it was revealed that Liverpool City Council is set to reduce its workforce by 1,500 jobs, with Manchester City Council preparing 2,000 cuts.
