Contractors 'should do research on a client'

Contractors that use an umbrella company are being advised that before they go into negotiations with a client, they should research them first.

By looking into a client's history and the work within an industry, contractors could quickly push themselves ahead of other potential candidates, Laura Spencer told Freelance Folder.

She hinted that, if someone associated with an umbrella company knows about the industry because they have worked for another client within it in the past, by all means mention it and show examples of the work done within that area.

One question that Ms Spencer believes could help contractors is that by "using your prior experience and/or your research, can you think additional or better ways to help the client meet his or her goal?", as the answers given could be what tips a client over into hiring a contractor.

Another technique that contractors could acquire to push them ahead of competitors is to learn a foreign language, according to Teresa Tinsley, director of communications at CILT.
