Contractors have been told that they should not have any fears about switching their current accounts to another bank.

Those with an umbrella company who have put up with bad service or witnessed poor deals have been told by Stefan Maryniak, personal finance expert at uSwitch.com, that they are actually losing out by not looking for another service.

He believes that many customers, including contractors, choose to stick with a bank because of fears about the handling of salaries, direct debits and bills, but assured contractors that many banks now have dedicated services to make the transition simple and stress-free.

Mr Maryniak explained: "The banks have actually got their act together really well when it comes to switching – this should reassure consumers who are thinking of taking the plunge."

His advice follows stats released by Consumer Focus, which found that 17 per cent of consumers had considered switching but chose to stick it out, while a further three-quarter of people had not even thought about doing this.
