Contractors could avoid strikes 'by having debates in workplace'

Category:

Contractors have been told that having debates in the workplace could help to prevent strike actions from taking place within it.

Following on from the strike in London involving the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) and the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) over October 3rd and 4th, Peter Harwood believes that other options could be explored to help reduce the chance of such action from taking place.

Those with an umbrella company who choose to address any disputes in the workplace early on may be able to stop the problems from dragging on to more complicated situations.

Mr Harwood, chief chancellor at Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas), explained: "It is always better to communicate well so that, where possible, parties negotiate changes, with the help of a third party if necessary, rather than resort to action such as management imposition or strikes."

Contractors may notice a change in the workplace if actions outlined by a new Confederation of British Industry report, called Keeping the Wheels Turning, with one point calling for a change in how a strike can be balloted.
