Contractors have been warned to be aware of money scams over the festive period, which could then lead to a dismal Christmas holiday.

Justin Modray, from Candidmoney.com, has suggested that there is "an inevitable spike" regarding this dishonest practice around Xmas, especially since people tend to spend more money at this time of year.

Furthermore, he believes that many people who struggle with their finances over Christmas may be prone to fall for scams, which appear to be "too good to be true".

Mr Modray suggested that ways those with umbrella companies can avoid being stung with a money scam when shopping for their gifts is to only use well-established websites and check for an address and telephone number which are both genuine.

He added: "If concerned it might be a scam, use a search engine to see whether anyone has posted information or a review of the retailer."

PIN numbers should also be guarded closely by contractors after 11 per cent of people said that they have been a part of identity fraud in the past, in a recent study by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk.
