Employers, including contractor umbrella companies, can take steps to boost productivity among home workers, it has been advised.

Working away from the office is not the ideal solution for everyone but should be included as part of flexibility efforts, said Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society.

"There's no doubt about it, for those who are self-motivated and can plan and organise, or their employer has helped them, people can be more productive," he commented.

"The key to it is employer support."

Firms should not expect to people who work from home to simply "go and do it", Mr Huxham added.

A survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers has revealed that employees value flexible working over material perks such as bonuses, suggesting firms should ramp-up their home working offering to save money and boost productivity.

Performance-related bonuses were said to be the most important benefit by just one in five of those questioned.
