Construction contractors 'may have tough year ahead'

Category: Contractor Industry News

Construction contractors may find that it takes longer for the industry to pick up when compared to the rest of the economy.

The latest survey from the Construction Products Association showed that the industry declined in the last quarter of 2009 and has predicted slow recovery this year.

Rising material, fuel and energy costs could all mean that professional contractors in the industry do not see an upturn for a year, the organisation has suggested.

Noble Francis, economics director at the Construction Products Association, said that the situation is "of great concern".

Stephen Ratcliffe, chief executive of the UK Contractors Group (UKCG), added that politicians still need to be convinced that spending on infrastructure is the way to help growth in the country.

"Getting this message across and acted upon remains [the] UKCG's top priority. We urge everybody in the industry to join us in this," he stated.

However, IT contractors are expected to see increased demand for their services, as Jamie Bowler, head of marketing at recruitment website the IT Job Board, said that the industry is set for growth.
