More people looking for work have chosen to fabricate parts of their CVs to boost the chance of acquiring work, those with umbrella companies have been told.

This is according to background screening company Kroll Background Worldwide, which stated that over the past 12 months, there has been a 115 per cent hike in CV discrepancies.

Furthermore, of the CVs that it screened in 2010, 42 per cent had contained some form of inconsistency, up from 19 per cent the year before.

The most popular embellishment found on these documents was connected to jobseekers' employment history, with 41 per cent having instances of this.

Education (19 per cent), directorships held (four per cent) and holding a professional qualification (two per cent) were some other lies discovered.

Alexandra Kelly, managing director of HireRight's EMEA region, commented: "With 44 per cent of all company fraud committed by employees, it is critical that employers know who they are hiring to manage their risk."

Yesterday, Peter Panayotou, senior consultant at The Write Stuff, told company umbrella contractors that a CV could be the "key thing" to achieving work.
