Company umbrella contractors 'should look at local clients for work'

The recent lashings of snow and wintry showers in the past few weeks have left many people stranded, but umbrella company contractors could benefit from this weather.

Gerry McLaughlin told IT Contractor that clients may be able to see the benefits of hiring local company umbrella contractors who can get on with their work, even if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

He advised that anyone considering this option should contact local companies which they would like to work in, send their CVs through to them and make sure to highlight to clients that they can still make it to the office when heavy snow fills the sky.

Doing this could also help those with umbrella companies to stay outside IR35, as one of the tests is to determine if someone sets their own work and hours.

Mr McLaughlin explained: "Working from home will certainly give them control over what they do and when they do it."

Meanwhile, contractors that are disrupted from travelling to work in wintry conditions could benefit from cloud computing.

Rob Lovell, chief executive of ThinkGrid, noted that this technology would allow them to keep up with their workloads from outside the office.
