Company umbrella contractors 'should be treated for working Xmas holidays'

Clients who will be putting their company umbrella contractors on standby over the Christmas period have been urged to make sure there are rewards in place to keep up morale.

Noelle Murphy, editor of Employment Review, acknowledged that just under 50 per cent of people will be either put on standby or available for call-out once the Xmas and New Year bank holidays hit.

However, those with umbrella companies who are required to work over any of these periods should expect to receive a boost in their pay packets – perhaps through double-time or time-and-a-half payments.

Another method which could help bring joy to umbrella company contractors over the festive season is for a client to offer a Christmas party or lunch, Ms Murphy recommended.

She explained: "Things like a Christmas party or Christmas lunch are probably even more important to maintain the morale of staff."

Her advice follows research recently conducted by FreeIndex.co.uk, which found that either Christmas Day or Boxing Day will be worked by one-third of small businesses this year.
