Company umbrella contractors 'may suffer from social jet lag'

Contractors with an umbrella company who have enjoyed the festive period without having to go to work may suffer from social jet lag once the routine gets back to normal.

This is according to claims by scientists, who have noted that irregular sleeping patterns and negative emotions about the end of Christmas can make people feel lacklustre and tired when they get back into the workplace.

It has been acknowledged that many company umbrella contractors would have been enjoying late nights and lie-ins once they finished their last shift pre-Xmas.

However, this will mean that social jet lag may crop up for those with umbrella companies once they get back to work, as they find it hard to sleep at night but feel tired during the working day.

Dr Victoria Revell, a chronobiologist at the University of Surrey, explained: "When we go back to work in the new year, our body clock will be set later than we want it to be."

Meanwhile, contractors should check to see if any of their colleagues are suffering from stress after the festive period, with Neil Shah, director of the Stress Management Society, noting that a change in behaviour should send alarm bells ringing.
