Build your client list, umbrella company users told
Posted by Sarah Putt
Freelancers using umbrella companies should focus on building up the best client list they can in order to maximise their opportunities, an expert has claimed.
Patricio Robles, writing for Econsultancy, said that this can often be the hardest part of being a "hired gun".
Veteran freelancers can also face this problem, he added, although usually due to high client turnover, which is a symptom that the wrong client list has been built.
"Instead of thinking all paying clients are created equal, think long-term and focus on acquiring clients that you have the potential to develop committed relationships with," he advised.
The ultimate goal, of never needing to do business development again, may be unattainable, but in striving for the ideal it is possible to minimise the day-to-day hustle that can be so distracting.
Earlier this month, ContractorUK's Cojak advised freelancers using umbrella companies to leave projects with the minimum of fuss and to eschew the traditional rituals of permanent staff departures such as cards and gifts.
