Avoid World Cup employment issues, contractor umbrella companies advised

Category: Employment Law, Taxation and Legislation for Contractors

Contract umbrella companies and other small employers have been advised on how to avoid employment issues during the World Cup.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and Abbey Legal Protection have called on bosses and staff to be aware of issues relating to time off, whether requested in advanced or unplanned.

Managers should engage with staff as soon as possible regarding their plans for work absences during the tournament, which starts on Friday, said Mike Cherry, policy chairman at the FSB.

"Employers need to be aware of the impact that unplanned absence could have on their ability to trade and employees need to know that throwing a sickie rather than asking for time off could result in disciplinary procedures," he commented.

Flexible working or allowing a radio or television in the office could help workers watch the matches that matter to them and ensure the business does not suffer, the bodies advised.

According to legal firm DLA Piper, more than half (51 per cent) of UK employers are considering being absent during the World Cup.
