Freelance contracting used to be easy - sign a contract, do your work, send in a timesheet, get paid, pay your taxes.  But all that has changed the Government is getting really tough on contractors and both the Treasury and HMRC are being pushed harder and harder to up their tax take.

The current targets seem to be managed service companies, tax-motivated incorporations and offshore employee benefit trusts.  So, if you're thinking of using an offshore scheme, or setting up your own limited company, think again.   But you will find that IR35, S660A, Employment Rights Act and the Working Time Directive all remain high on the Governments's agenda.

If you think this sounds like a complex, ever-changing, expensive legal nightmare - you're right.  In order to help you OrangeGenie will be developing this section of our web site with a series of short, comprehensive guides that you can use if you need to understand a particular issue.
