IT contractors face more job cuts with new Immigration Points System
Date: April 03, 2009
Despite recent pay cuts for IT contractors (See OrangeGenie contractor news article) and a failing economy, changes to the Government’s immigration rules sees more migrants from outside the EU entering the UK and taking IT contractor roles.
Changes to the entry points scoring system came into force 31st March 2009, aiming to make Britain a more appealing place to enter. Some concessions have been given to help protect local IT contractors and other skilled workers, by stipulating that employers must advertise any jobs internally within the UK before requesting non European Union applicants, however these measures seem to pale against the tiered points reduction which may facilitate far more easy entry to UK job positions.
Reports in the press suggest over 35,000 non EU IT workers were granted entry into the UK last year despite the economic downturn.
